La jerarquía de Miguel Borja se conoce desde el 2018, cuando marcó 9 goles en 12 partidos con el Palmeiras en la Copa Libertadores 2018, pero en River había que comprobar si le iba a pesar el Manto Sagrado o no. Pero esa prueba no tardó en llegar porque contra Aldosivi en su segundo partido con la Banda Roja demostró que no porque en tan solo 15 minutos despachó dos asistencias y un gol sacando del medio con el baile del “Colibrí” incluido. Aunque, por ahora, ese fue el único partido donde se sintió cómodo en la cancha porque en los otros tres encuentros que disputó con el Millonario (Gimnasia de La Plata, Sarmiento e Independiente) estuvo desorientado en el césped y sin lograr asentarse dentro del campo para asociarse con sus compañeros mediocampistas y delanteros.
Por eso su compañero de la selección colombiana y un experto en el mundo River, Rafael Santos Borré, salió a bancarlo en una entrevista con ESPN previo a la final de la Supercopa de Europa entre Eintracht Frankfurt de Alemania y el Real Madrid en la cual habló sobre el presente que tiene el delantero de 29 años en River y opinó sobre como le irá en el Millonario: “Borja está muy bien. Estoy tranquilo, sé que es un gran delantero que tiene mucho para ofrecerle al club”.
Además, agregó sobre los funcionamientos y planteos que tiene el director técnico Marcelo Gallardo con el plantel a diferencia de la Selección cafetera y sobre como se adaptará el Colibrí a ellos: “De a poco, Marcelo le va a ir encontrando la vuelta para que encaje en el equipo y sea lo que él le puede brindar a River”.
