Demichelis llegó a las 50 victorias en 82 partidos tras vencer a Deportivo Táchira y se ubicó como el mejor primero de la fase de grupos. Esto no pasaba desde 2005, cuando Leonardo Astrada dirigía al Millonario, y existen algunas similitudes entre los dos técnicos.
La primera experiencia de Astrada dirigiendo llega en 2004, donde River queda eliminado de la copa por penales, al igual que Demichelis ante Inter de Porto Alegre, en lo que fue también su comienzo desde el banco y los dos, en su año siguiente, lograron 16 puntos que alcanzaron para que River defina todas las series en el Monumental.
Ese equipo del 2005 se enfrentó en fase de grupos a Olmedo de Ecuador, Júnior de Barranquilla y Nacional de Montevideo, solo empató contra los ecuatorianos cuando ya estaba clasificado. River dejó en el camino a Liga de Quito en octavos y a un debutante Banfield, dirigido por Falcioni, en cuartos. En semifinales San Pablo, quien luego sería el campeón, le cortó el camino al equipo de Astrada.
Era un River que posiblemente estaba como para festejar, pero los problemas extradeportivos en la zaga central millonaria que conformaban Tuzzio y Ameli fueron determinantes. “Si hubiéramos podido traer dos centrales, yo creo que hubiera sido otra cosa, porque era un plantel tremendo” dijo “El Negro” Astrada con el pasar de los años.
Hoy, dejando de lado el hecho de una traición que nada tiene que ver con fútbol, parecería que existe una situación similar. Un plantel con una calidad increíble y una idea de juego que con sus gustos o disgustos, existe y es concisa, pero despierta alarmas al pensar en la buena sinergia entre el grupo y el entrenador, más allá de los campeonatos conseguidos durante el tiempo en el que “Micho” estuvo a cargo y su récord de 50 victorias, 18 empates y 18 derrotas.
